William Blattner serves as Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University with a specialization in modern German philosophy, particularly the early thought of Martin Heidegger. For the 2024–25 academic year, he is on research leave at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg as a visiting researcher hosted by Prof. Inga Römer of the Philosophisches Seminar.
His research spans phenomenology, existentialism, philosophy of history, philosophy of sport, and the history of modern philosophy. He has significantly contributed to Heidegger scholarship through his updated and expanded edition of Heidegger's "Being and Time": A Reader's Guide, which serves as a key resource for understanding foundational phenomenological concepts.
His recent publication "The state of the question in early Heidegger studies" in The Southern Journal of Philosophy exemplifies his ongoing engagement with Heideggerian thought. This work situates within broader philosophical disciplines including Continental Philosophy and History of Philosophy, with specific contributions to subfields such as Hermeneutics, Ontology, German Idealism, and Metaphysics, reflecting persistent scholarly interest in Heidegger's evolving intellectual trajectory.
