William Barndt serves as Associate Professor of Political Studies at Pitzer College within The Claremont Colleges consortium in California. He has been a faculty member since 2013, teaching across the Political Studies field group with a focus on comparative politics, political theory, and American politics.
His educational credentials include a BA from Colby College, followed by MA and PhD degrees from Princeton University. This academic foundation has shaped his expertise in comparative politics of the Americas and political theory.
Professor Barndt's research spans comparative politics of the Americas, political parties, democratic populism, the discipline of political science, the political importance of place, and the theory & practice of small residential liberal arts colleges. His work uniquely bridges specialized political science research with practical educational concerns.
His publications reveal two interconnected scholarly trajectories: detailed studies of Latin American politics (particularly party systems and political violence) and explorations of American political thought through analyses of figures like William F. Buckley Jr. and Christopher Lasch. This dual focus culminates in his current book project Political Science at Home, which examines the relationship between political science as a discipline and liberal arts education.
His teaching portfolio includes innovative courses such as Why Politics?, Building Political Parties, Civil Disobedience, and collaborative seminars like The Politics & Arts of Resistance (with Prof. Dan Segal) and Rethinking Radicalism (with Prof. Corey Tazzara), demonstrating his commitment to interdisciplinary political education.
