Corey Tazzara is an Associate Professor of History at Scripps College, specializing in early modern Europe and the Mediterranean. His work focuses on economic relations, cross-cultural trade, and the circulation of knowledge. He holds a Ph.D. in History from Stanford University (2011) and a B.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University (2004), graduating summa cum laude.
His current research project examines Pietro Della Valle’s interactions with the Propaganda Fide and the dissemination of Eastern knowledge in early modern Italy. Key publications include "Filippo Sassetti on Trade, Institutions, and Empire in the Renaissance" (Routledge, 2023) and "The Free Port of Livorno and the Transformation of the Mediterranean World" (Oxford UP, 2017).
Awards include the American Academy in Rome Fellowship (2019–20), Mary W. Johnson Faculty Achievement Award (2018), and multiple fellowships from Stanford and the University of Chicago. His research has been supported by grants from the Renaissance Society of America and the Fulbright Program.
His academic focus spans free ports, cross-cultural trade dynamics, and the intersection of commerce and politics. Tazzara’s work bridges economic history with cultural studies, emphasizing institutional frameworks and information networks in early modern Europe.
