Prof. Filippo de Vivo is a Professor of Early Modern History and River Farm Foundation Tutorial Fellow in History at the University of Oxford. He previously held positions at Birkbeck, University of London, and Trinity College, Cambridge. His work focuses on the Republic of Venice, Mediterranean history, and the interplay between communication and politics in early modern Europe. He leads projects on archival history, microhistory, and transnational information networks.
Educated at universities in Milan, Cambridge, and Paris, his research spans Venetian political culture, the role of archives in state formation, and the circulation of ideas through manuscripts, print, and urban spaces like piazzas and pharmacies. He co-edited Archival Transformations in Early Modern Europe (2016) and is completing a critical edition of Thomas Hobbes' translation of Fulgenzio Micanzio's letters.
His research has been supported by prestigious grants including the Philip Leverhulme Prize and European Research Council funding. Notable works include Information and Communication in Venice (2007) and Microhistories of Long-Distance Information (2019). He explores themes like 'archival intelligence,' the history of walking in Renaissance Venice, and the Thirty Years' War's informational dynamics.
Prof. de Vivo collaborates internationally, editing special journal issues and leading multidisciplinary teams. His current projects emphasize methodological innovation in microhistory and the material culture of information exchange. He mentors students in early modern European history and global Mediterranean studies.
