William B. Campbell, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He holds a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (1974) and a BS in Pharmacy from the University of Texas (1970). His research focuses on the regulation of vascular tone and adrenal steroidogenesis by endothelial-derived mediators, particularly eicosanoids such as epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) and lipoxygenase metabolites.
Key research areas include:
- Endothelial cell signaling pathways involving arachidonic acid metabolites
- Mechanisms of endothelial-derived hyperpolarizing factors (EDHFs)
- Adrenal blood flow regulation by EETs and steroidogenic hormones
- Role of 15-lipoxygenase metabolites in vascular responses under pathophysiological conditions (hypoxia, hypercholesterolemia)
His studies elucidate how endothelial-derived mediators influence cardiovascular health, hypertension, and adrenal steroid production. Recent work explores EET receptor biology (e.g., GPR40), macrophage lipid metabolism, and translational applications of EET analogs for therapeutic intervention.
Publications highlight contributions to understanding EET-activated potassium channels, 12(S)-HETE signaling in macrophages, and angiotensin-mediated adrenal physiology. His research bridges basic lipid biochemistry with clinical implications for cardiovascular and endocrine disorders.
