William A. Cohen is a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Maryland, serving as Associate Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Studies. He previously held roles such as Chair of the English Department and Director of Undergraduate Studies. His research focuses on Victorian literature, the history of sexuality, sensory studies, and literary theory. Cohen’s work bridges interdisciplinary approaches, exploring themes like embodiment, filth, and cultural norms in 19th-century texts.
His notable publications include Sex Scandal: The Private Parts of Victorian Fiction (1996), Filth: Dirt, Disgust, and Modern Life (2005, co-edited), and Embodied: Victorian Literature and the Senses (2009). He has also contributed to journals like PMLA and Victorian Literature and Culture.
