William 'Doug' Singsen

William 'Doug' Singsen is an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, specializing in modern and contemporary art, visual culture, and comics studies. He holds a PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center (2013). His research focuses on decolonizing art history, American comics, and the intersection of mass culture and avant-garde traditions. Notable publications include The Invisible Costume: Whiteness and the Construction of Race in American Comics (2022) and contributions to Modernism/modernity and Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics. He is a co-author of an upcoming art history textbook Art: A Global History (Oxford UP).
Teaching includes courses like ART 100 (Foundations of Art/Visual Culture) and ART 226 (Modern Art and Graphic Design). He serves as Program Coordinator for the General Education Program and has held leadership roles in the Faculty Senate. His awards include an Eisner Award nomination (2023).
