Will Redman serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Music at Towson University's College of Fine Arts and Communication. A Baltimore-based composer and percussionist, his innovative work has gained international recognition through performances and broadcasts across the U.S. and Europe.
His educational background includes:
- BA in Composition from University of Maryland Baltimore County
- MA in Composition from University of Southampton (England)
- PhD in Composition from SUNY Buffalo
Professor Redman studied composition with Stuart S. Smith, Michael Finnissy, and Jeff Stadelman; percussion with Kevin Norton and Tom Goldstein. His research centers on radical reinterpretation of traditional music notation to provoke unconventional performer interpretations. Creative practice spans experimental composition, percussion performance, and cross-genre ensemble work through Microkingdom (avant rock/jazz), Umbilicus (percussion quartet), and The Compositions (chamber ensemble). His output has been featured in Notations 21 (cover image), The Wire, BBC3, and major festivals including Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and High Zero.
Dr. Redman leads ensembles functioning as collaborative laboratories for compositional experimentation, with Microkingdom exploring rock-jazz fusion, Umbilicus focusing on percussion innovation, and The Compositions developing chamber-based experimental works.
