Will Marler serves as a Senior Research and Teaching Associate within the Internet Use & Society Division of the Department of Communication and Media Research (IKMZ) at the University of Zurich, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He actively contributes to the Digital Society Initiative (DSI), specifically the DSI Community Communication, which connects interdisciplinary researchers addressing digital transformation challenges.
His research examines digital media practices in marginalized communities, with emphasis on how individuals experiencing poverty cultivate social capital and exchange mutual support through online platforms. He also investigates intersections of social media, science communication, and religious discourse using ethnographic methods, in-depth interviews, and survey research to analyze complex socio-technical dynamics.
Dr. Marler's work bridges communication studies, media sociology, and digital inequality research within the University of Zurich's Digital Society Initiative framework. His methodological approach combines qualitative depth with quantitative breadth to document how vulnerable populations navigate digital spaces for community building and resource sharing.
