Wilfred Otten is a Professor of Soil Biophysics at Cranfield University, where he has been since 2016. Previously, he held the Chair of Biophysics of Soil Ecosystems at Abertay University (2007–2016) and worked at the University of Cambridge on soil-borne fungal diseases (1990–2006). His research focuses on soil physics, chemistry, and microbiology, integrating mathematical modeling to understand soil processes for sustainable management. He leads projects on urban soil ecosystem services, resilience of fungal communities, and cover crop impacts on soil health.
Education: Agricultural Engineering (Wageningen University, Netherlands), PhD in Horticultural Sciences (Wageningen University, Netherlands). Awards include Fellow of the Institute of Soil Science and President of the British Society of Soil Science (2017–2018).
Current activities involve advancing digital agriculture, soil resource management, and soil health through initiatives like the Agri-Tech Phenotyping and Soil Health Facilities. His work spans grants from NERC, BBSRC, and industry collaborations, addressing applied challenges like erosion mitigation and carbon sequestration.
