Dr. Wessel Woldman is an Emerging Leader Fellow at the University of Birmingham, holding a position in the Department of Metabolism and Systems Science. He serves as the Deputy Lead for Business Engagement and is a key member of the Centre for Systems, Modelling and Quantitative Biomedicine. His work bridges advanced mathematical modeling with clinical applications, particularly in epilepsy and diabetes research.
Wessel Woldman holds the following academic qualifications:
- PhD in Mathematics (2016, University of Exeter)
- MSc in Applied Mathematics (2012, University of Twente, The Netherlands)
- MSc in Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (2012, University of Twente, The Netherlands)
- BSc in Applied Mathematics (2008, University of Twente, The Netherlands)
Woldman's research centers on applying mathematical and computational models to clinical problems, with a primary focus on epilepsy and diabetes. He investigates the dynamic behavior of biological systems to understand transitions between healthy and pathological states. His work aims to develop diagnostic tools and improve prognosis by analyzing clinical data through advanced techniques such as network analysis, time-series modeling, and statistical inference. This interdisciplinary approach bridges mathematics, neuroscience, and clinical medicine.
Woldman's publication record over the last decade demonstrates a consistent focus on epilepsy, particularly in developing computational biomarkers from EEG and other clinical data. His work increasingly incorporates dynamic network modeling to understand seizure generation and propagation. Recent publications highlight the application of these models in drug resistance and the development of decision support tools for clinical use, reflecting a translational trajectory from basic science to healthcare applications.
Dr. Woldman has received several prestigious awards and fellowships:
- MRC Skills Development Research Fellowship
- setsquare ICURe award (2015)
- Commercialisation prize from the Epilepsy Foundation of the USA
- HLS award from Innovate UK
- Emerging Leader Fellow Epilepsy Research UK
Woldman has secured significant research funding, including an MRC Skills Development Research Fellowship and an Epilepsy Research UK Emerging Leader Fellowship. He also received the setsquare ICURe award to commercialize his research, leading to the co-founding of Neuronostics. Additionally, his work with Neuronostics attracted a commercialisation prize from the Epilepsy Foundation and an HLS award from Innovate UK. These grants support his translational research in epilepsy diagnostics.
Woldman is a core member of the Centre for Systems, Modelling and Quantitative Biomedicine at the University of Birmingham. He co-founded the start-up Neuronostics, where he serves as Scientific Director, leading a team focused on developing and validating decision support tools for epilepsy. His research involves collaborations with clinicians in the UK and Australia, and he works within interdisciplinary teams that integrate mathematics, neuroscience, and clinical practice.
