Wesley C. Zech is a Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He also serves as the Director of the Online Master's in Engineering in Construction Engineering Management. Previously, he held the position of Brasfield and Gorrie Professor of Construction Engineering and Management at Auburn University. His research focuses on construction engineering methodologies, erosion and sediment control, project management, safety, and the application of unmanned aerial systems (UAVs) in construction site inspections.
Dr. Zech earned his B.S., M.E., and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University at Buffalo. His professional experience includes collaboration with state transportation departments (e.g., Alabama and Ohio DOTs) to develop practical erosion control solutions. He pioneered the Auburn University Erosion and Sediment Control Testing Facility, which evaluates full-scale performance of erosion control practices like silt fences, ditch checks, and sediment basins.
His current research emphasizes sediment barrier system performance, UAV-based site inspections, and rainfall simulator design for erosion control evaluation. He has published extensively on topics including construction safety, work zone safety, and geospatial analysis of occupational injuries. His teaching spans construction equipment, project management, and sustainable design.
Zech’s contributions include developing methodologies for liquidated damages calculation in construction contracts and optimizing road user cost analyses. His work bridges academic research and industry application, with a focus on environmental sustainability and safety in construction practices.
