Werner Sewing was a Professor in the Department of Architectural Theory at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). His academic journey began with studies in sociology, history, political science, and psychology at the University of Bielefeld and the Free University of Berlin. He held roles such as Lecturer and Assistant Lecturer at the Technical University of Berlin and Free University of Berlin, alongside guest professorships at institutions like UC Berkeley and TU Braunschweig. He served as Managing Director of the Institute of Design, Art and Theory (2010–2011).
His research focused on architectural sociology, urban sociology, and architectural theory, with contributions to curatorial work (e.g., Austrian Pavilion at Venice Biennale 2008) and advisory roles in architectural associations. Notable awards include the Erich Schelling Prize for Architectural Theory (2006). He was actively involved in professional societies like the German Sociological Association and the Association of German Architects (BDA).
Werner Sewing passed away on 27 July 2011.
