Prof. em. Dr. Werner Schmutz is a retired Adjunct Professor at ETH Zurich's Department of Physics and Director of the Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos und Weltstrahlungszentrum (PMOD/WRC) since 1999. His research focuses on solar radiation and its climatic impacts, leading space missions like the PICARD satellite's PREMOS instrument and ESA's PROBA-2/3 projects. He holds an adjunct professorship awarded in 2002.
- Education: Diploma in Physics (1979), Doctorate in Natural Sciences (1984), Habilitation (1995) – all from ETH Zurich.
- Leadership Roles: President of the International Radiation Commission (IAMAS) and Swiss Commission on Space Research, COSPAR delegate.
Key research contributions include measuring Total Solar Irradiance and advancing SI-traceable radiometry. He leads the SNF Sinergia project on solar influence on Earth's climate.
