Dr. Wenwei Xu is a Professor of Corn Breeding at Texas Tech University's Department of Plant and Soil Science, with a joint appointment at Texas AgriLife Research. He earned his B.S. in Agronomy (1982) from Gansu Agricultural University, M.S. in Plant Breeding and Genetics (1985) from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Ph.D. in Genetics (1992) from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
His research focuses on developing multi-stress-tolerant corn germplasm for food, feed, and silage using conventional and molecular breeding methods. Key traits include yield optimization, drought/heat tolerance, pest resistance (corn earworm, mites), and aflatoxin resistance. His team discovered root systems and hydraulic lift as drought tolerance mechanisms, released four inbred corn lines, collaborated with seed industries, and licensed germplasm to ten companies.
Dr. Xu teaches PSS 3421 (Fundamental Principles of Genetics) and PSS 6322 (Advanced Plant Breeding). His future work targets sustainable corn production via crosses between temperate and tropical varieties to address Ogallala Aquifer depletion concerns.
