Dr. Mark Burow is a Professor of Molecular Genetics at Texas Tech University, holding a joint appointment with Texas AgriLife Research. He leads research in improving peanut seed quality, reducing production costs through water usage and disease management, and applying molecular genetics tools for crop improvement. His expertise includes molecular markers for plant breeding without genetic modification, focusing on traits like nematode resistance.
Dr. Burow earned his Ph.D. in Plant Breeding/Plant Genetics and Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1990), and a B.A. in Chemistry and Development in Latin America from St. Olaf College (1981). He teaches courses such as PSS 3421 (Fundamental Principles of Genetics) and PSS 6424 (Structural Genomics and Animals).
Future research priorities include collaborative projects on disease-resistant and abiotic stress-tolerant peanut varieties, leveraging molecular markers to enhance breeding efficiency. He emphasizes mentoring graduate students to cultivate critical thinking and advance agricultural science.
