Prof. Weizhi Ji is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and serves as Professor and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Primate Biomedical Research at Kunming University of Science and Technology. He graduated from Yunnan University (1982) and has spent over three decades developing non-human primate disease models using cutting-edge biotechnology.
- Academic Leadership: Chairman of Chinese Society for Stem Cell Research (2019–present)
- Scientific Expertise: Specializes in embryonic development, stem cell pluripotency, and neurodegenerative disease modeling
- Technological Innovation: Pioneered gene-edited primates (2014), chimeric monkey models (2015), and extended embryo culture systems (2019–2020)
His research focuses on regenerative medicine and developmental biology, with particular emphasis on gastrulation studies, neurodevelopmental disorder treatments, and primate translational medicine.
Key publication trends (2014–2021):
- Evolution of gene editing techniques (TALEN→CRISPR→Base Editing)
- Progression from disease modeling to chimeric organism creation
- Advancements in embryo culture duration (monkey→human)
- Interdisciplinary applications spanning neuroscience, genetics, and biotechnology
Scientific Recognition:
- 2019 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Award
- 2018 Yunnan Provincial First Prize in Natural Science
- 2016 Innovative Research Award (Chinese Stem Cell Society)
- 2015 Lifetime Contribution Award (Chinese Society for Cell Biology)
Prof. Ji's lab has produced groundbreaking work in primate biomedical research, including the first gene-modified monkeys (2014) and extended human embryo culture systems (2020). His platform integrates in vitro fertilization, gene editing, and stem cell research to address neurodevelopmental disorders and fundamental embryology questions.
