PD Dr. Ruth Olmer leads the RG Olmer research group at Hannover Medical School (MHH), embedded within the Leibniz Research Laboratories for Biotechnology and Artificial Organs (LEBAO). Her group specializes in developing pluripotent stem cell-based therapies for pulmonary diseases, focusing on differentiation of embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells into airway and alveolar epithelial cells. The research addresses genetic disorders such as Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and surfactant deficiencies (SD), aiming to replace defective lung epithelial cells through regenerative medicine approaches.
Her team collaborates with Prof. Martin’s group on gene correction technologies for patient-derived iPSCs and evaluates cell therapies in animal models. Funded by the German Centre for Lung Research (DZL) and the BMBF’s CARPuD network, the group also develops reporter cell lines using TALEN-based gene editing for drug screening and protocol optimization. The lab is active on X (@OlmerLab).
Ruth Olmer’s team includes postdocs (Julia Dahlmann, Laura von Schledorn) and PhD students (Laurien Czichon, David Puertollano Martin, Theresa Niemöller, Aileen Schmidt), alongside a voluntary scientific year participant (Leonie Malhofer). Research priorities include overcoming challenges in cell engraftment and advancing stem cell therapies for end-stage lung diseases.
