Weiqian Xia is a Researcher at the Department of Sociology, Stockholm University, and a postdoctoral fellow at Åbo Akademi University’s Department of Demography in Finland. They hold a PhD in Sociology from Stockholm University, with prior degrees from Tilburg University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Sun Yat-Sen University. Their research focuses on religion, ethnicity, migration, and political sociology, particularly in secularizing European contexts. Current projects include studying religious membership in Finland using register data, demographic change among Swedish-speaking Finns, and migration trajectories of Finnish migrants in Sweden and Finland.
Key research areas include the intersection of religion and political attitudes, secularization dynamics, and the impact of migration on socioeconomic outcomes. Xia’s work has been supported by Wenner-Gren Fellowships and involves collaborations with institutions like SUDA (Stockholm University Demography). Publications explore topics such as immigrant political participation, LGBTQ+ legislation effects, and Christian religiosity’s role in radical right voting patterns.
Teaching includes courses on quantitative methods, globalization, and complex inequality. Their research emphasizes rigorous demographic analysis and register-based studies to understand societal trends and demographic shifts.
