Weidong CHEN

Dr. Weidong CHEN is a Professor of Optics at the University of the Littoral Opal Coast (ULCO), France, holding this position since 2003 after serving as a Lecturer from 1993. He also maintains adjunct faculty status at Rice University (USA) and is an invited professor at the Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (Chinese Academy of Sciences, China).

His academic background includes:

• M.S. and Ph.D. from University of Sciences & Technologies of Lille, France

Dr. Chen's research centers on optical metrology for atmospheric science, with three main thrusts: (1) developing photonic instrumentation for applied spectroscopy; (2) optical sensing and metrology of atmospheric trace gases (concentration, isotope ratios, vertical profiles) and aerosols (optical properties); (3) generating optical parametric laser sources via frequency conversion. His work has resulted in over 160 peer-reviewed articles and 220 conference contributions.

His scientific achievements have been recognized with:

• 1986 Guangdong Province Prize for Scientific and Technical Progress (China) for a Fourier transform THz spectrometer
• Nomination for the 1999 Sir Harold Thompson Memorial Award (USA) for an infrared laser spectrometer

Dr. Chen leads the LPCA research group at ULCO, which develops photonic instruments from UV to mid-IR for atmospheric monitoring. The group is funded by European (INTERREG), French national (ANR, ACI, CNRS), and regional (IRENI, CLIMIBIO) programs.

He actively contributes to the scientific community through editorial roles, including co-editing special issues for Applied Optics (2016) and Sensors (2018), and co-editing an Elsevier book on advanced spectroscopic measurement techniques for atmospheric science.
