He earned his German Doctorate in Natural Sciences (1997) from Karlsruhe University, focusing on alpine landslides.
Research focuses on landslide mechanics, slope stability, geophysical methods, and reservoir geohazards. He contributed to major projects like the Three Gorges Dam foundation analysis (1988 award) and collaborated with German institutions on contaminated site remediation and geophysical non-excavation techniques. As guest professor at Karlsruhe, he taught landslide monitoring and clay mineralogy.
Supervised 4 PhDs and 8 masters students (including 2 Germans), currently mentoring 31 students (16 PhD candidates).
