Wei Jiang is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Immunology at the College of Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina. Her research focuses on microbial-immune interactions in HIV disease, autoantibody pathogenesis, and neuroimmunological consequences of substance use. She leads translational studies investigating the impact of oral microbiome dysbiosis on neurocognitive disorders in HIV and Alzheimer’s populations.
- Holds multiple NIH R01 grants including R01DA059854 (2024-2029) examining drug-mediated immune dysfunction in HIV
- Recipient of the 2019 Dean’s High Impact Research Award for breakthrough work on Staphylococcus-driven autoimmunity in HIV
- Co-leads MUSC’s Translational Science Award investigating microbiome-cognition links in neurodegenerative diseases
Key research themes include:
- Microbial translocation mechanisms driving HIV-associated immunopathology
- B cell dysfunction in immunodeficiency and autoimmunity
- Neuroinflammatory effects of cannabinoids and cocaine in HIV patients
- Development of human microglia models for studying NeuroHIV
Recent publications highlight discoveries on cannabis-induced β-amyloid elevation, cocaine’s gut-protective paradox, and HIV latency mechanisms involving epigenetic regulators.
Current lab activities involve multidisciplinary collaborations with virologists, neuroscientists, and computational biologists to advance precision medicine approaches for immune-related disorders.
