Wazhmah Osman serves as Associate Professor in Temple University's Department of Media Studies and Production within the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication. She holds dual appointments in the PhD program in Media and Communication and the Master of Science in Globalization and Development Communication program, while maintaining faculty affiliations with Temple's Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies program and the University of Pennsylvania's South Asia Center.
Her academic foundation includes a 2012 PhD in Media, Culture and Communication from New York University complemented by specialized training in Anthropology's Culture and Media program.
Osman's research employs feminist media ethnography to dissect global media's political economy, with groundbreaking work on international funding's impact on Afghan media politics, colonial tropes in 'war on terror' technologies, and cross-border media flows in conflict zones. Her scholarship critically examines how visual culture regimes reinforce power structures across South Asia, particularly Afghanistan.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a cohesive trajectory examining media's role in postcolonial conflict, development communication dynamics, and digital culture in the Global South, consistently highlighting intersections of representation, violence, and geopolitical power.
Her documentary Postcards from Tora Bora has achieved international recognition through global film festival screenings, though specific awards remain unnamed in source materials.
Professor Osman mentors graduate students across PhD and Master's programs while teaching pivotal courses including Global Media and Public Information Media Campaigns, shaping discourse on media institutions and development communication through structured academic guidance.
