Prof. Wayne Horowitz is Professor of Assyriology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He received his Ph.D. under W.G. Lambert at the University of Birmingham, England, with his dissertation published as Mesopotamian Cosmic Geography.
His research focuses on Ancient Near Eastern Science, Literature and Religion, with special emphasis on the Heavens and Astronomy. His scholarly interests include:
- Assyriology and Cuneiform Studies
- Ancient Near Eastern Religion and Mythology
- Mesopotamian Legal Traditions
- Ancient Astronomy and Calendar Systems
Prof. Horowitz has co-edited several significant works including Cuneiform in Canaan (2007, updated 2018), Writing Science before the Greeks (2011), Living the Lunar Calendar (2012), and The Cuneiform Uranology Texts (2018). His recent publications analyze connections between Canaanite cuneiform laws and biblical legal traditions, as well as Babylonian creation mythology.
His research demonstrates how ancient Near Eastern texts provide crucial context for understanding biblical law and cosmology, challenging previous assumptions about the origins of biblical legal concepts.
