Prof. Uri Gabbay is Associate Professor of Assyriology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Department of Archaeology. He received his Ph.D. in Assyriology from the Hebrew University in 2008 and has established himself as a significant scholar in ancient Near Eastern studies.
His research focuses on:
- Assyriology and cuneiform literature interpretation
- Ancient Near Eastern religious practices and divination systems
- Comparative studies of Babylonian and Jewish scholarly traditions
- Commentary traditions in ancient Mesopotamia
- Textual criticism of ancient literature across cultures
Dr. Gabbay's scholarly work reveals sophisticated connections between ancient interpretive traditions, particularly examining how Mesopotamian cultures developed commentary practices that parallel later biblical interpretation methods. His research demonstrates that ancient scholars created commentaries on their texts as early as the 8th century BCE.
His publications include significant monographs such as "The Exegetical Terminology of Akkadian Commentaries," "The Ersema Prayers of the First Millennium BC," and "Pacifying the Hearts of the Gods: Sumerian Emesal Prayers of the First Millennium BC." These works showcase his expertise in ancient prayer traditions, commentary practices, and religious knowledge transmission in Mesopotamia.
Dr. Gabbay has edited (with Shai Secunda) the important volume "Encounters by the Rivers of Babylon: Scholarly Conversations between Jews, Iranians and Babylonians in Antiquity," which explores intellectual exchanges between different ancient Near Eastern cultures and highlights his interdisciplinary approach to ancient scholarship.
