Wasimul Chowdhury serves as a Non-Tenure Track (NTT) Associate Professor in the Department of Biology within the College of Science and Mathematics at Georgia Southern University. His academic affiliation spans the university's Statesboro, Armstrong, and Liberty campuses, with his primary office located in Biology 2204B at the Statesboro campus.
His research focuses on molecular approaches to enhance precursor supply for bio-based products. Key interests include:
- Engineering recombinant bacterial strains for polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biodegradable polymer production from renewable resources
- Rational design of fatty acid biosynthetic enzymes using X-ray crystallography to alter substrate specificity
- Molecular enzymology of PHA synthase (phaC gene) and regulatory proteins (phaR gene)
He teaches General Biology, Microbiology, and Principles of Biology I Lab, applying his expertise in microbial systems to undergraduate education. His work targets sustainable biopolymer synthesis through enzyme mechanism optimization under controlled conditions.
Chowdhury maintains active laboratory operations across Georgia Southern's campuses, with research infrastructure supporting protein expression, metabolic pathway engineering, and polymer characterization. Current projects emphasize structural analysis of PHA biosynthesis enzymes to improve industrial applicability of biodegradable materials.
