Dr. George Yuzhu Fu is a Professor in Water and Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction at Georgia Southern University. With over 30 years of experience in Environmental Engineering with an emphasis on Water and Environment, he has established himself as a leading researcher in water treatment technologies and sustainable infrastructure solutions. His work contributes significantly to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to clean water and sanitation.
- Ph.D. in Environmental Systems Engineering, University of Regina (2002)
- M.S. in Environmental Engineering, Tianjin University (1989)
- B.S. in Environmental Engineering, Tianjin University (1986)
Dr. Fu's research focuses on innovative water treatment solutions, particularly in the areas of wastewater reclamation and reuse, biofilters, green infrastructure, and water treatment processes. His work spans from fundamental studies on biosorption mechanisms to practical applications of coal fly ash and biochar for color removal and stormwater management. His fingerprint analysis reveals strong expertise in Electric Power Plant Engineering (100%), Coal Combustion Engineering (93%), Surface Water Engineering (66%), and Color Removal Chemical Engineering (66%).
Dr. Fu's recent publications demonstrate a clear progression from traditional water treatment methods toward more sustainable, nature-based solutions. While early work focused on color removal using coal fly ash from pulp mill effluents, his most recent research explores biochar-amended topsoils for highway stormwater treatment. This evolution reflects a broader shift in the field toward circular economy approaches that utilize waste materials for environmental benefit while addressing complex challenges like nutrient pollution and emerging contaminants.
- Developed and established Water and Environmental Research Lab (1,000 ft2) with state-of-the-art instruments worth over $200K
- Completed/working on over $700K in externally funded research primarily as Principal Investigator
- Principal Investigator for multiple Georgia Southern University research funds and equipment grants
- Co-Principal Investigator on City of Savannah project for Watershed Assessment
- Principal Investigator on Georgia Department of Transportation project for Roadway Runoff Impacts
Dr. Fu has mentored numerous graduate students who appear as co-authors on his publications, including Ahmed Ibrahim Yunus, Musfiques Salahin, and Md Azizur Rahman. His Water and Environmental Research Lab serves as a hub for student research in sustainable water treatment technologies. With professional engineering experience at AECOM, SNC-Lavalin, and North China Municipal Engineering Design & Research Institute, he brings valuable industry perspective to his academic work and student mentorship.
Dr. Fu's Water and Environmental Research Lab (1,000 ft2) houses a variety of state-of-the-art instruments with a total worth of more than $200K. His collaborative network extends across multiple institutions, with co-authors from universities in China, Canada, and the United States. Current projects focus on highway stormwater treatment using biochar-amended topsoils and digital twin applications for industrial water treatment compliance.
