Warren Breckman is the Sheldon and Lucy Hackney Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences. His expertise spans modern European intellectual and cultural history, with a focus on Romanticism, Marxism, post-Marxism, and critical theory. He holds a Ph.D. (1993) and M.A. (1988) from UC Berkeley, and a B.A. (1986) from the University of Winnipeg.
His research explores themes such as the symbolic in post-Marxist thought, the intellectual legacy of Marx and the Young Hegelians, and the transnational dimensions of Romanticism. Recent projects include a study on the 'Machiavellian Moment in Modern Thought' and a micro-history of World War I. He has authored influential books like *European Romanticism* (2015) and *Adventures of the Symbolic* (2013), and edited volumes such as *The Cambridge History of Modern European Thought* (2019).
Breckman has held fellowships at the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, Princeton Institute for Advanced Study, and École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. His awards include the Richard S. Dunn Award for Teaching (1997). He has served as executive co-editor of the *Journal of the History of Ideas* (2006–2016) and co-founded the *Zeitschrift für Ideengeschichte*.
His teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses on European intellectual history, the cultural impact of World War I, and modern French thought. He advises graduate students on topics ranging from German liberals post-1848 to the reception of Marx's writings.
