Edward Baring is Associate Professor of History and Human Values at Princeton University, specializing in twentieth-century European intellectual history with emphasis on philosophy, religion, and transnational thought.
He holds a BA in Mathematics and History from the University of Cambridge and a PhD from Harvard University. Before Princeton, he taught at Drew University for ten years.
Baring's research examines continental philosophy, Catholicism's influence on modern thought, Marxism, and Jacques Derrida's early career. His work traces philosophical exchanges across national boundaries and religious traditions.
Publications explore themes like secularization, philosophical conversion, and methodological approaches to intellectual history. Recent work focuses on concepts of 'vulgar Marxism' across twentieth-century political thought.
He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, ACLS, and Guggenheim Foundation.
Baring teaches courses on modern European intellectual history and mentors graduate students in transnational approaches to philosophical traditions.
His current project investigates 'vulgar Marxism' as a conceptual framework in twentieth-century political theory.
