Wanyu Chung is an Associate Professor in Economics at the Department of Economics, Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham. She is also a Research Affiliate at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and has served as an ONS Fellow since January 2023, advising the UK’s Office for National Statistics. She is a member of the Steering Group for the UK Women in Economics Network (UKWEN).

Her research focuses on international trade, international economics, and international macroeconomics. She investigates topics such as invoicing currency choice, vehicle currency pricing, exchange rate pass-through, regional content requirements, and the economic implications of Brexit. Her work often employs empirical analysis of transaction-level data and contributes to both academic understanding and policy formulation.
Her recent publications span from 2016 to 2025 and reveal a consistent trajectory in trade economics, with increasing emphasis on Brexit-related issues and policy analysis. Key themes include market power in trade agreements, the role of customs agents and authorised economic operators in trade facilitation, and the measurement of economic uncertainty using machine learning and textual analysis.

Wanyu Chung collaborates extensively with leading economists such as Natalie Chen, Dennis Novy, Carlo Perroni, and Robert Elliott. Her research has been supported through affiliations with CEPR and policy engagement with the ONS. She contributes to public discourse through policy reports on Brexit and trade regulation.
She is involved in research projects examining the impact of Brexit on trade, media bias, and supply chain resilience, often leveraging novel methodologies like computer vision and machine learning.
