Walter Wildi is an Honorary Professor of Geology at the University of Geneva, affiliated with the Department F.A. Forel for Environmental and Aquatic Sciences and the Institute for Environmental Sciences (ISE). He previously held the position of Professor of Geology at the University of Geneva from 1986 to 2013. His academic career includes roles such as Director of the Institute F.-A. Forel (1995–2011) and Director of the Centre of Environmental Sciences (1992–2007). Wildi’s research focuses on geology, environmental science, and nuclear waste disposal, with contributions to understanding sedimentology, contaminated site management, and lacustrine ecosystems.
Wildi’s education includes a Dr. Sc. nat. from ETH Zurich (1976) and postdoctoral research at institutions like ETH Zurich and the University of Paris VI. His professional activities span academic leadership, governmental advisory roles (e.g., Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Commission, 1997–2007), and interdisciplinary environmental studies.
His scientific work emphasizes regional geology (Alps, North Africa), glacial geology, and the environmental impacts of human activities. Recent research includes investigations into microbial contamination in lakes and the long-term persistence of pollutants in sediments. Wildi has published extensively on topics ranging from radioactive waste disposal to the geochemical analysis of lake sediments.
Teaching contributions include courses on geomorphology, waste management, and environmental geology at both bachelor and master levels. His involvement in public discourse includes expert opinions on climate change impacts, such as a 2019 article in Le Temps discussing Alpine glaciers as climate indicators.
