Rolf Kipfer is a Lecturer at ETH Zurich's Department of Environmental Systems Science and Head of the Department of Water Resources and Drinking Water at Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute for Aquatic Science and Technology). His research focuses on physical transport processes in the hydrosphere, tracer hydrology, isotopic techniques, and environmental change reconstruction using natural archives like groundwater, speleothemes, and lake sediments.
He holds a diploma (1986) and PhD (1991) in earth sciences from ETH Zurich. From 1996, he has led Eawag's Environmental Isotopes Group. Key roles include Adjunct Professor at ETH Zurich’s Department of Environmental Sciences since 2008, and membership in the Swiss government advisory body KNE (Commission for Nuclear Waste Disposal) since 1999.
Notable projects include the Lake Van Drilling Project (CHF 1.5M), STALCLIM climate reconstructions (CHF 1.6M), and noble gas applications in speleothemes. Research spans noble gases in lakes, groundwater, and ice cores, with emphasis on ecological-hydrological dynamics and paleoenvironmental reconstructions.
Teaching includes courses on hydrology, isotopes in biogeochemistry, and term paper development. His work bridges environmental science, geology, and climate studies with significant interdisciplinary funding and collaborations globally.
