Dr. Adrian Gilli serves as a Lecturer at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (D-EAPS) at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, where he has been employed since August 2014. Previously, he worked as a Senior Assistant in the Climate Geology Group at ETH Zurich from 2007 to 2014, following postdoctoral research at the University of Florida.
His research expertise spans multiple interconnected fields:
- Sedimentology - examining physical, biological and chemical processes in lacustrine and marine systems
- Limnogeology - using lake sediments as geological archives
- Paleoclimatology - reconstructing past climate conditions from sediment records
- Natural hazards - particularly historical flood patterns and risk assessment
Dr. Gilli's publication record demonstrates a cohesive research program focused on Alpine flood history and paleoclimate reconstruction. His work consistently employs lake sediment analysis to develop multi-millennial environmental records, with particular emphasis on flood event chronologies and their relationship to climate variability in the European Alps. His methodological approaches integrate sedimentological analysis with geochemical proxies to extract seasonal and long-term climate patterns.
At ETH Zurich, he teaches core sedimentology courses including Sedimentology I: Physical Processes and Sedimentary Systems, Sedimentology II: Biological and Chemical Processes in Lacustrine and Marine Systems, and Sediment Analysis, reflecting his expertise across fundamental and applied aspects of sedimentary processes.
His academic journey began with Earth Sciences studies at ETH Zurich (1993-1999), continued with PhD research at the Geological Institute (1999-2003), and included postdoctoral work at the University of Florida before returning to ETH Zurich for his current academic career.
