Walter S. Gershon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary Education & Critical Foundations at Rowan University's College of Education. He serves as Program Coordinator for the Master’s in Urban Education and Community Studies. His research focuses on justice in education, sociocultural processes in youth sense-making, and qualitative methodologies, situated at the intersection of critical education studies, sensory/sound studies, and urban pedagogy.
Dr. Gershon has authored two award-winning monographs and co-edited a groundbreaking volume in sonic studies. His work emphasizes collaborative methods with disenfranchised youth and innovative qualitative approaches to understanding educational experiences. Notable accolades include the 2019 Outstanding Book Award (Society of Professors of Education) and dual recognition from the American Educational Research Association (AERA).
Previously, he held an Associate Professorship at Kent State University’s School of Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum Studies (2014–2017), where he also served as LGBTQ Affiliate Faculty and Provost Associate Faculty. His scholarship bridges theoretical rigor with community-engaged praxis.
