
Walter Metz

Walter Metz is a Full Professor at the School of Media Arts, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. His research spans contemporary film and television criticism, literature and film, science and film, and post-war American culture. He holds a Ph.D. in Radio/Television/Film from the University of Texas at Austin (1996) and an S.B. in Materials Science from MIT (1989).

His work explores intertextual relationships between film, television, novels, and theatre, with a focus on gender, comedy, opera, Cold War, Holocaust, science, and animals. He has authored three books and over sixty refereed articles, emphasizing adaptation studies, genre theory, and cultural analysis.
Recent publications highlight trends in 21st-century adaptation, intertextuality, and genre evolution. Notable themes include walking in cinema, postmodern literary adaptations, and experimental science films. His courses include Film Criticism, Photography Theory, Non-Narrative Film, and Television Sitcoms.
