Her research centers on American cinema history with specialized expertise in film noir's evolution, censorship mechanisms, and musical intersections. Her four major scholarly books reveal consistent thematic progression from historical origins (2005) to censorship studies (2018) and specialized genre explorations (2014, 2024), demonstrating deepening analytical focus on visual adaptation techniques and musical dimensions within noir traditions.
Dr. Biesen actively contributes to academic discourse through editorial roles including Secretary of the Literature/Film Association, Founding Chair of the 'Stars & Screen' Film & Media History Conference, and editorial board membership for Film Criticism, where she also edited The Velvet Light Trap.
