Walter J. Toomey

Walter J. Toomey is an Associate Teaching Professor and LSAC Pre-Law Advisor in the Legal Studies Program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, within the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Criminology and Justice Studies. A licensed Massachusetts attorney, he maintains an active law practice in Boston specializing in business law, employment law, and civil litigation, including discrimination cases and civil rights matters.

His educational background includes:

• B.A. in Philosophy and Biology from University of Massachusetts Lowell, with a supporting area in Legal Studies
• M.A. in Criminal Justice from UMass Lowell
• J.D. from Suffolk University Law School

Professor Toomey's research and teaching expertise spans Business Law, Employment Law, Litigation, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Intellectual Property, and Ethics. His work addresses complex legal issues in workplace discrimination, civil rights, and business regulations, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of law and technology.

His scholarly contributions include co-authoring two editions of "Intellectual Property Law Fundamentals", which are widely used textbooks in the field. These works provide in-depth analysis of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets, reflecting his commitment to advancing legal education.

Among his professional accolades are the Department Teaching Excellence Award (2017) and recognition as a Thomson Reuters Super Lawyers Rising Star (2013-2016). He has also served in leadership roles such as president of the North Atlantic Regional Business Law Association.
