Walter E Purdy is a Professor at George Mason University's Department of Criminology, Law and Society, affiliated with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He directs the Terrorism Research Center and developed the Mirror Image training program to combat terrorism. Previously, he served as a Police Supervisor and In-Service Training Manager at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy. His work involves advising law enforcement, military, and intelligence communities on counterterrorism strategies.
Dr. Purdy holds a J.D. from Thomas Cooley School of Law. His research focuses on radicalization dynamics, suicide bombings, and operational methodologies of terrorist networks. He lectures globally at institutions like the Joint Special Operations University and IACP Conferences.
He teaches courses such as CRIM 230 (Introduction to Homeland Security), CRIM 462 (Law Enforcement and Homeland Security), and CRIM 595 (Terrorism and Homeland Security). His grants include a Center Fellowship at the Center for the Study of the Presidency.
Purdy’s academic contributions span epistemology, moral philosophy, and experimental philosophy, with publications addressing knowledge attribution, moral judgment, and decision-making processes. His work bridges theoretical philosophy with practical applications in security and law enforcement.
He coordinates initiatives supported by U.S. State Department, Department of Justice, and Department of Defense. His Mirror Image program remains a cornerstone of international counterterrorism training efforts.
