Walter DeKeseredy is the Anna Deane Carlson Endowed Chair of Social Sciences and a Professor of Sociology at West Virginia University (WVU), where he also directs the Research Center on Violence. His work focuses on violence against women, criminology, gender-based crime, and rural criminology. He teaches courses like SOCA 493A: Special Topics in Violence Against Women. DeKeseredy has authored 31 books, 150+ articles, and 130+ book chapters, with notable works including Skating on Thin Ice (2023) and Criminological Understandings of Horror Films (2024). His research spans topics like online hate culture, incarcerated girls' mental health, and disability-related victimization.
Awarded numerous accolades, including the ASC Fellowship (2022), DCCSJ Praxis Award (2022), and multiple lifetime achievement honors, his contributions bridge academic rigor and social justice advocacy. He leads WVU’s West Virginia Community Quality of Life Survey, focusing on rural crime and victimization.
