Professor Walid Khaled is a Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge and Group Leader at the Wellcome-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. He holds affiliations with the Breast Cancer Programme at the Cambridge Cancer Centre and the School of Biological Sciences. His research focuses on early epithelial tumor initiation, particularly in breast cancer, leveraging single-cell sequencing and collaborative initiatives like the Human Breast Cell Atlas.
Education: PhD in Pathology (University of Cambridge, 2007) followed by postdoctoral research at the Sanger Institute. Recognized for contributions to open science, sharing protocols and datasets publicly.
Research Interests:
- Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transitions in cancer
- Immune dysfunction in high-risk breast tissue
- Cancer resistance mechanisms in naked mole-rats
- Pre-clinical drug trials targeting tumor microenvironment
Key Achievements: Developed novel methods for early cancer detection, identified exhausted immune cells in BRCA1/2 carriers, and co-leads UKRI's Aging Cluster initiative. Awards include CRUK Career Awards (2014-2027).
Laboratory: The Khaled Group includes researchers working on tumor biology, cell atlas projects, and translational studies. Collaborations span basic science to clinical applications.
