Dr. Waldir Miron is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of West Florida's Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering. He holds a PhD in Biology from Swansea University and specializes in evolutionary biology, particularly reproductive strategies in fishes.
His research investigates the molecular mechanisms and evolutionary consequences of diverse reproductive systems, including self-fertilization in killifish and asexuality in Amazon mollies. Additional interests include phenotypic plasticity, epigenetic inheritance, and the development of environmental biomarkers using DNA methylation patterns. Fieldwork spans Brazil and Costa Rica, focusing on poeciliid sperm biology and hybrid zone dynamics.
Recent publications emphasize genomic adaptations in hybrid systems and conservation genomics of threatened fish species. Articles frequently integrate experimental data with phylogenomic approaches to examine speciation mechanisms.
Awards include a 2023 FSBI grant for poeciliid sperm research and an OCAST award for paternal effects studies. He leads the Miron Lab and collaborates internationally through the International Stock Center for Livebearing Fishes.
