Eric Haag is a Professor and Director of the Biological Sciences Graduate Program at the University of Maryland, College Park. His research focuses on the evolution of sexual reproduction in nematodes, particularly the genetic and developmental mechanisms enabling self-fertile hermaphroditism. He leads the Haag Lab, which investigates how shifts to uniparental reproduction impact gene loss, reproductive isolation, and organismal biology.
- Education: PhD in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology (Indiana University, 1997), Postdoctoral Fellowship in Evolution of Nematode Sex Determination (University of Wisconsin, 2001).
- Affiliations: Member of the Biological Sciences Graduate Program, and the BISI research groups in Molecular & Cellular Biology, Behavior/Ecology/Evolution, and Computational Biology.
Research interests include the evolution of germline sex determination, consequences of self-fertility (e.g., genome shrinkage, hybrid lethality), and sperm competition dynamics. Techniques employed span genetics, genomics, and experimental evolution in Caenorhabditis nematodes and mangrove killifish.
Recent work highlights the role of male-secreted glycoproteins in reproductive isolation and the development of genetic tools for studying phenotypic plasticity in killifish. He is also an award-winning science communicator, authoring a popular book on the evolutionary history of sexual reproduction.
