Peter Andolfatto is a Professor of Biological Sciences at Columbia University. His research focuses on evolutionary processes shaping genome evolution, with an emphasis on understanding the genetic mechanisms underlying adaptations and species-specific traits. He leads the Andolfatto Lab, collaborating closely with the Przeworski and Sella labs. His work spans diverse organisms, including Drosophila, butterflies, fish, reptiles, and amphibians.
Research Interests: Genomics, computational biology, evolutionary biology, population genetics, and molecular genetics. Specific projects include studying toxin resistance mechanisms in Na⁺K⁺-ATPase, dosage compensation in butterflies, and hybridization-driven speciation in fish. The lab integrates functional genomics, population genomics, and experimental evolution.
Key Publications: Recent work includes studies on mitonuclear incompatibilities in swordtail fish (2025), three-dimensional genome architecture and gene duplication (2024), and toxin resistance strategies in fireflies (2023). Earlier notable studies include analyses of cardiac glycoside resistance (2019) and hybrid speciation mechanisms (2015).
Advising: Supervises PhD and undergraduate students, including current advisees such as Lina Ruiz Grajales (Drosophila genomics) and Arjun Krishnan (coral adaptation). Former students include Molly Schumer (now at Stanford) and Matthew Aardema (Montclair State University).
