Noah Whiteman is a Professor of Genetics, Genomics, Evolution, and Development at the University of California, Berkeley. He holds appointments in the Department of Molecular & Cell Biology and the Division of Genetics, Genomics, and Development, with affiliations to the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, Essig Museum of Entomology, and other research centers. His work focuses on understanding how biotic interactions—particularly plant chemical defenses, herbivory, and predator-prey dynamics—drive evolutionary innovations. Key projects include studying Scaptomyza leaf-mining flies, monarch butterflies, and the evolutionary integration of horizontally acquired genes into animal immunity systems.
Research interests emphasize the genetic basis of adaptations to toxins, including glucosinolates, cardiac glycosides, and phage-derived immune proteins. Techniques span genomics, molecular biology, and ecological experiments. The Whiteman Lab collaborates across disciplines to explore toxin pharmacology, co-evolutionary arms races, and the ecological implications of herbivore specialization. Their work intersects with biomedical applications, such as toxin-based therapies for neurological disorders.
Award-winning science communicator, Whiteman authored Most Delicious Poison (2023), a popular science book on nature’s toxins.
