Nitin Phadnis is an Associate Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Utah. He holds a BS in Microbiology from the University of Pune (2000) and a PhD in Biology from the University of Rochester (2008). His postdoctoral training at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (2013) focused on integrating evolutionary genetics with cell biology and genomics. His research explores mechanisms underlying speciation, genetic conflict, and chromosomal rearrangements, primarily using Drosophila as a model system.
Phadnis' research interests span evolutionary genetics, speciation genomics, and the interplay between chromosomal rearrangements and reproductive isolation. He investigates hybrid incompatibilities, meiotic drive systems, and the molecular basis of hybrid sterility and inviability. His work has revealed critical insights into how selfish genetic elements and genomic conflicts drive evolutionary processes.
Recent studies highlight his focus on hybrid incompatibility loci, the role of chromosomal inversions in speciation, and the evolution of cell cycle regulation in hybrids. His articles often bridge evolutionary questions with molecular mechanisms, such as the transformation of meiotic drive into hybrid sterility.
