Wahid Ferdous is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ). He holds a PhD from UniSQ and has held research and teaching roles at Monash University, the University of Melbourne, and Imperial College London. His work focuses on sustainable materials, structural composites, and waste recycling in construction.
Education:
- BSc in Civil Engineering (Hons), Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (2008)
- Graduate Certificate in Education, University of Southern Queensland (2016)
- MEng, University of New South Wales (2013)
- PhD, University of Southern Queensland (2017)
Research Interests:
Dr. Ferdous specializes in transforming landfill wastes (plastics, tyres, glass) into sustainable construction materials. His work supports circular economies and net-zero emissions through innovations in fibre composites, polymer concrete, and geopolymer systems. He investigates structural performance using finite element modeling and experimental testing, particularly for railway infrastructure and modular buildings.
Publication Trends:
His recent publications (2023–2025) emphasize low-carbon sandwich panels, biochar in cementitious composites, waste-based railway sleepers, and hybrid GFRP-softwood systems. These works reflect a strong trend toward sustainable, modular, and durable infrastructure solutions using recycled and composite materials.
Scientific Awards:
- Postgraduate Thesis Award 2018 – Engineers Australia & Engineering New Zealand
- Publication Excellence Awards – University of Southern Queensland (2015, 2016, 2017)
- Australian Postgraduate Award (2014)
- University Gold Medal – Rajshahi UET (2008)
Supervision and Grants:
He supervises multiple PhD and Master’s students working on sustainable composites and waste valorization. His research has attracted over $600,000 in competitive grants, including an Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowship and an Endeavour Research Fellowship. Key projects include integrating waste plastics into railway sleepers and developing low-carbon sandwich panels for modular housing.
Labs and Teams:
Dr. Ferdous collaborates with the Centre for Future Materials at UniSQ and works closely with industry partners such as Faiveley Transport and CO2Tech Pty Ltd. His research team focuses on composite material development, structural testing, and sustainable infrastructure innovation.
