W. Timothy Garvey

W. Timothy Garvey is Professor and Chair of Nutrition Sciences at UAB, with joint appointments in Medicine and Cell Biology. As founding Director of the UAB Diabetes Research Center, he leads research on insulin resistance, obesity genetics, and diabetes complications. His work integrates molecular biology, human physiology, and community genetics.

Garvey has published extensively on insulin action mechanisms since 1978, with recent focus on orphan nuclear receptors (NR4A), metabolic syndrome pathogenesis, and intergenerational disease transmission. He mentors trainees through NIH-funded programs and directs core facilities supporting genetic and metabolic research.
