Mr. Dr. W. (Pim) Geelhoed is an Associate Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at the Faculty of Law, University of Groningen. He holds a PhD from Leiden University (2013) and previously served as an assistant professor at both Leiden (2013–2017) and Groningen (2017–2021) before his promotion to Associate Professor in 2021. His research focuses on EU criminal law, comparative criminal procedure, organized crime, and financial crimes, employing interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives.
Geelhoed is an ad hoc judge at the Court of Appeal in Arnhem-Leeuwarden and holds multiple leadership roles: Academic Director (acting) of the LLM Global Criminal Law program, Member of the Steering Committee of the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime, and National Rapporteur on Corporate Criminal Liability for the European Law Institute. He also contributes to legal commentaries for Wolters Kluwer and serves on advisory boards for journals and religious institutions.
His recent publications explore topics like the EncroChat jurisprudence, EU legal harmonization, and international cooperation during emergencies. Geelhoed frequently engages with media as an expert on criminal law issues, addressing topics such as police infiltration tactics, terrorism investigations, and cross-border legal challenges.
His work bridges academic research, judicial practice, and policy-making, emphasizing the intersection of European legal frameworks with national implementations. He actively participates in committees like the Meijers Committee (on European immigration and criminal law) and contributes to debates on contemporary legal challenges in an increasingly interconnected global context.
