Voula Gaganis is an Associate Professor in Physiology at Flinders University's College of Medicine and Public Health, where she currently serves as Teaching Program Director (Clinical) since 2024. She also coordinates the Medical Science Laboratory Medicine program and previously served as Teaching Program Director for Medical Biosciences. With over two decades of experience at Flinders University, she began as a PhD student and post-doctoral researcher in Clinical Pharmacology before transitioning to teaching roles including PBL tutor in the MD Program.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Renal Glucuronidation of Fatty Acids and Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs from Flinders University (2004), a Master of Education (Higher Education) from Flinders University (2023), and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) from the University of South Australia. She is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK (2023).
Gaganis specializes in Physiology Education with particular expertise in Higher Education pedagogy and Active Learning methodologies. Her research focuses on implementing innovative teaching techniques, particularly cloud-based learning technologies in medical science physiology topics. She has contributed significantly to establishing core concepts in physiology education across Australian higher education institutions and has published extensively on active learning approaches and physiological core concepts. Her work bridges traditional physiology knowledge with contemporary educational practices to enhance student learning outcomes in medical sciences.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on physiology education, core concepts development, and innovative teaching methodologies. The research shows a clear pattern of collaboration across Australian institutions to standardize physiology education, with particular emphasis on concepts like homeostasis and cell membrane function. Her work increasingly incorporates active learning strategies, self-regulated learning techniques, and interdisciplinary approaches to medical education.

As a mentor and educational leader, Gaganis contributes to the AAUT Network Mentor Scheme and serves as convener of the College's Teaching Specialist Community of Practice since 2020. She has secured multiple education grants including the WATTLE Academic Leadership Course grant (2024), HERDSA Conference Travel Grant (2024), and funding for her Teaching Specialist Community of Practice (2021). Her leadership extends to numerous committees including the Medical Program Board (2025+), Course Quality Advisory Groups, and the Academic Promotions Committee.
Gaganis leads the Teaching Specialist Community of Practice, an interdisciplinary group representing medicine and public health disciplines across the College. This community fosters ongoing interactions between teaching specialists with a focus on scholarship of teaching and learning, relationship building, collaborative activities, and sharing knowledge of teaching practices. She also serves on the Hellenic Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (2025+) and the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (2024+), demonstrating her commitment to both educational excellence and community engagement.
