Volker Wieland

Volker Wieland is Professor of Monetary Economics and Managing Director of the Institute for Monetary and Financial Stability (IMFS) at Goethe University Frankfurt. He has held the Endowed Chair of Monetary Economics since 2012 and previously served as Professor of Monetary Theory and Policy from 2000 to 2012. He is a Founding Professor of IMFS and was Director of the Center for Financial Studies (2003–2009). Wieland is a Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), a member of the Kronberger Kreis, and the Scientific Advisory Council of the German Ministry of Finance. Since 2023, he co-chairs the Council for the Future of the Hessian Economy and served on the German Council of Economic Experts (2013–2022) and the Stability Council advisory board (2021–2022).

Wieland’s research focuses on monetary and fiscal policy, business cycles, macroeconomic modeling, inflation dynamics, learning in economic systems, and numerical methods. His work has been published in leading journals such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Monetary Economics, and European Economic Review. A recurring theme in his recent publications is the macroeconomic impact of pandemics and policy responses, including fiscal and monetary strategies during crises like COVID-19. He has contributed to the development of the Macroeconomic Model Data Base for comparative policy analysis.

His scientific awards include the 2019 Monetary Workshop Prize, the 2017 Public Service Fellowship, and the 2008/09 Wim Duisenberg Research Fellowship from the ECB. He has served as Managing Editor of the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control and on editorial boards of several journals.

His leadership has positioned IMFS as a key player in European monetary policy analysis.
